What to Expect
Your first office visit will be from an hour and a half to two hours in length. This gives me the opportunity to understand your current symptoms and experiences as well as get a thorough medical history and do any physical exam that is indicated. Guided by your interests and needs, together we determine the course of treatment. Often this includes screening blood work or other laboratory analysis. Follow-up visits are one hour. After scheduling you can print out my intake forms, take the time to complete them at home, and then bring them with you to your first visit. My practice is located in the Awakenings Wellness Center. Please enter through the front door and wait in this first-floor lobby. Feel free to get water or tea in the kitchen. My office is on the second story; if you have difficulty navigating stairs, please let me know ahead of time, so special arrangements can be made.
Labels and Diagnoses
It is important to understand your symptoms and accurately diagnose underlying causes of your mental health concerns, but psychiatric labels are much less relevant to the work I do. At OpenMind, labels such as depression, bipolar or schizophrenia are not mandates for medication nor are they a life sentence. At best psychiatric diagnoses are a description of an individual’s current symptoms and a sign that something is out of balance. I am most interested in understanding you as an individual, working with you to identify your own obstacles, and helping you move beyond them towards a state of integration and wellness.
I work with people regardless of their beliefs around conventional medications. I do not prescribe psychiatric medications very often, but I regularly work with patients who are taking them. Some people see me because they want to avoid going on prescription medication altogether. Others have already gone down that road without success or want holistic support while they are transitioning off the drugs. Still others have been helped by their medications and are interested in additional approaches or would like to prevent side effects. Naturopathic therapies are useful in all of these circumstances. I am skilled at using them as stand alone treatments as well as alongside other medications. It is important to have an open dialogue with the prescribing practitioner as the drugs often need to be reduced as one’s health improves.
I believe we are all best supported by the team approach. If you are working with other providers, I am happy to contact them and work collaboratively to provide you with the best comprehensive care. This is particularly important if psychiatric medications are involved.
As a courtesy to my patients, I do bill insurance companies. Not all insurance plans cover my services, however, and it is up to you to verify your benefits prior to your appointment. Please see the OpenMind Insurance Information for guidance in this process.
